Rain or Shine Elasto Painters leaned on a fourth-quarter run to defeat the Magnolia Hotshots, 84-77, in the Game 1 of the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup semifinals at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum Friday night.
Behind a 10-0 run early in the final frame, the E-Painters turned a 61-58 advantage into a 73-63 cushion before a 6-0 counter by the Hotshots closed the distance to just 69-73, under the last seven minutes.
But that was the closest Magnolia could get as Beau Belga and Gabe Norwood responded with back-to-back triples to put the game away.
As a result, the second-seeded Elasto Painters took a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-seven showdown.
Javee Mocon led the scoring for Rain or Shine with 15 points highlighted by two three-pointers on top of 10 rebounds, Norwood put up an all-around output with 13 points, eight rebounds, three steals, two assists, and a block, while Belga tallied 12 points, six rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block in the win. Ed Daquioag added 10 markers.
Paul Lee paced Magnolia with 15 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Ian Sangalang tallied 13 points and five boards, while, Mark Barroca and Jio Jalalon chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Game 2 of the series is on Sunday, April 14, still at the Big Dome.
