NorthPort Batang Pier finally snapped out of its funk as it nipped the Phoenix Fuel Masters, 80-70, in the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup on Saturday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
The Batang Pier immediately woke up from a short slumber early in the payoff period, as Phoenix turned a 14-point deficit into a one-point advantage, 61-60, over nine minutes to go.
But NorthPort countered with its own rally to lead by as much as 12 points that they never surrendered this time.
NorthPort thus halted a four-game slide for a 2-4 win-loss card, while the Fuel Masters went down with a 2-5 win-loss record in the team standings.
Moala Tautuaa spearheaded the Batang Pier with 16 points, Paolo Taha added 14 markers, while import Mychal Ammons was good for 12 points.
Meanwhile, Alex Mallari scored 15 and Eugene Phelps finished with 14 points, 14 rebounds, and eight assists. Jason Perkins was the only other local in double figures for Phoenix with 10 points, as RR Garcia, who rescued the Fuel Masters with his game-winner the last time out, was held to just nine markers.
