Gilas Pilipinas suffered a huge heartbreak to end its FIBA World Cup group campaign, absorbing an 84-81 overtime loss at the hands of Angola on Wednesday at the GBA International Sports and Cultural Center in Foshan, China.
Dropping to 0-3 in Group D, the Philippines, ranked 31st in the world, will now head to the classification round that starts this Friday, while world No. 39 Angola concluded the group round with one win against two losses.
Putting up their best performance of the tournament, the Filipinos were able to come back from 12 points down in the fourth period to force an overtime and even take a three-point lead, 76-73, off a Roger Pogoy layup and an Andray Blatche foul shot.
But Angola unleashed a 10-5 counter behind Carlos Morais and Yanick Moreira in the extra period to come through with the win and frustrate the Nationals.
Blatche spearheaded the gallant Gilas with 23 points, 12 rebounds, and four steals, while CJ Perez had another solid outing, finishing with 17 points, seven rebounds, and three assists.
Valdelicio Joaquim showed the way for the Angolans with 20 points on a 6-of-10 shooting clip along with seven boards.
