Gilas Pilipinas suffered an embarrassing winless 2019 FIBA World Cup campaign as it bowed to Iran, 95-75, on Sunday night at the Beijing Wukesong Sports Center in China.
As a result, the Philippines ended up with a 0-5 record and in danger of finishing dead-last, while Iran secured a berth in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after edging China as the best Asian team in the tournament.
Gilas kept it a close game throughout the first quarter but failed to sustain its hot shooting as the Iranians went on a blast in the second canto for a 48-34 advantage.
It was all Iran from then on as it pulled away further in the second half, leading by as much as 29 points late in the game.
Five players breached double figures for the Olympic-bound Iran, as Hammed Haddadi led the way with 19 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks.
Nik Kahmrani and Mohammed Jamshidi made 17 and 16 points, respectively, with the former going a solid 10-of-11 from the foul stripe, while Behnam Yakhchali and Aaron Geramipor added 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Meanwhile, Robert Bolick had a team-high 15 points for Gilas, while June Mar Fajardo added 10 markers. Andray Blatche finished with 15 points, five rebounds, and five assists before suffering an ejection late for committing two technical fouls.
