San Miguel Beermen prevailed in another hard-fought match against the TNT KaTropa, taking a 106-101 victory in Game 4 of the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup finals at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum Sunday night.
Dragged into a dogfight, the Beermen showcased their trademark grit and resilience to withstand TNT’s furious late-game rally to equalize the best-of-seven championship series, two games apiece.
Chris McCullough came up with a huge double-double with 27 points and 22 rebounds, while June Mar Fajardo contributed 22 points on 9-of-17 shooting, and Alex Cabagnot added 25 markers.
San Miguel built a lead as much as 15, 84-69, on a key run in a stretch bridging the last two quarters. But the KaTropa went on a scoring spree in the fourth period and threatened to within 96-98 with 40.3 seconds left.
Fajardo, though, made a crucial basket to widen San Miguel’s lead, 100-96, with 27.7 seconds to go, before Chris Ross and Cabagnot sealed the win with their freebies.
Terrence Jones, who took the Best Import award, produced 32 points on 12-of-31 shooting while adding 16 rebounds, six assists, and six steals. Jayson Castro, meanwhile, who was named Best Player of the Conference ahead of the game, had 17 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists in a losing effort for TNT.
Game 5 is on Wednesday, August 14, still at the Big Dome.
