TNT KaTropa dodged the upset bullet as it scraped past the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, 118-114, in their knockout quarterfinal thriller in the 2017 PBA Governors’ Cup Friday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
The win thus sealed the semifinals entry for the second-seeded KaTropa, sending them to a best-of-five series against defending champions Barangay Ginebra.
Glen Rice, Jr. topscored with 34 points, including a tip in on Jayson Castro’s miss that gave them a 116-114 edge with 10 seconds to go.
The athletic import also finished with 16 boards, nine assists and three blocks in 40 minutes of play, while Jayson Castro came through with 20 points, 12 dimes and six rebounds while going 12-of-12 from the charity stripe, including the last two that tied the game at 114-all.
The Elasto Painters blew their chances in the last 10 seconds after committing a huge turnover off a timeout, that led to them fouling a TNT player to stop the clock. Ryan Reyes settled the final score with his two free throws.
J’nathan Bullock paced Rain or Shine with 30 points, while Beau Belga and Mark Borboran had 18 and 15 markers, respectively.
