Marcio Lassiter took charge in overtime to carry the San Miguel Beer past the Barangay Ginebra, 104-102, in the Game 2 of their 2018 PBA Philippine Cup semifinal series at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum Sunday evening.
The SMB gunner exploded in the second half, before coming through with a game-winning putback off Fajardo’s miss in the final three seconds that gained them a 2-0 edge in their best-of-seven showdown.
Lassiter ended up with 25 points, highlighted by four triples, eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals in almost 46 minutes. June Mar Fajardo was unstoppable in the paint as he registered 33 points and 19 boards, on top of two assists, two blocks, and one steal in 49 minutes.
After being down by as much as 15 points, the defending champions relied on Lassiter and Santos, who didn’t disappoint, as the duo conspired in a 13-4 attack to tie the game at 95-all, 11 seconds left in fourth quarter.
The Gin Kings, after failing to win in regulation, appeared they can finally go home triumphant in overtime when they established a 102-98 cushion, 1:02 to go.
But Lassiter had other things in mind, as he scored San Miguel’s last six points, including the tip-in with three ticks left to ruin their opponents’ night and spoil Prince Caperal’s career-best effort of 26 points on 11-of-18 shooting, eight boards, three assists, and one block in almost 32 minutes as a starter.
Japeth Aguilar led the way for Ginebra with 28 points, seven boards, five assists, two blocks, and one steal that just went for naught.
Game 3 of the series is on Tuesday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.
