San Miguel Beermen maintained its billing as the ‘team to beat’ after winning over the slumping Meralco Bolts, 101-86, their fifth win against only one loss, to wrap up the PBA Philippine Cup elimination round this 2016 on a high note, Wednesday night, at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay, City.
The reigning All-Filipino Conference champions waxed hot early on to produce a comfortable cushion that went up as high as 31 points, enough to withstand any fightback that the Bolts tried to start.
Despite getting unusual numbers of 11 points and 14 rebounds from three-time PBA season MVP June Mar Fajardo, San Miguel did not worry much as Lassister and Cabagnot came to rescue.
Marcio Lassiter finished the duel with game-high 21 markers while Alex Cabagnot, before leaving the game in the third canto, had already put up 20 points.
Meralco, who suffered its second straight heartbreaking loss just one week ago, now dropped to 2-4 after failing to match the Beermen’s energy. The Bolts tried to return to the ball game late in the fourth but could only close to within nine points.
Chris Newsome led the Bolts with 16 points. Both coming off the bench, Joseph Yeo and Baser Amer had 12 markers apiece.
