Phoenix Fuel Masters sealed the top seed as it squeaked past the San Miguel Beer, 96-93, in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup on Saturday at the Panabo Multi-Purpose Tourism, Cultural, and Sports Center in Panabo City, Davao Del Norte.
Coming off a 100-97 defeat at the hands of the Barangay Ginebra last Sunday, the Fuel Masters started strong but had to steel themselves against the Beermen’s last-ditch rally.
As a result, the league-leading Fuel Masters earned a twice-to-beat incentive in the playoffs as they ended the eliminations with a 9-2 win-loss record-their best regular season finish in franchise history.
Matthew Wright, who had a team-high 25 points, converted on a three-pointer with over a minute left before Jason Perkins (10 points) nailed a turn around jump shot to snap the four-game winning streak of San Miguel.
June Mar Fajardo finished with a double-double of 29 points and 12 rebounds that just went down the drain as the four-time reigning champions Beermen dropped to 6-4 with the loss.
PHOENIX 96 – Wright 25, Mallari 12, Perkins 10, Chua 9, Kramer 9, Jazul 8, Dennison 7, Revilla 5, Mendoza 4, Abueva 4, Marcelo 3.
