Eugene Phelps nailed a dagger basket to steer the Phoenix Fuel Masters to a thrilling 95-93 victory over Alaska Aces in the 2017 PBA Governors’ Cup on Saturday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The import went straight to the hoop for an easy layup just before the game clock expired to save Phoenix from upset and foil Aces’ comeback bid. He ended up with 29 points, 14 rebounds and two assists in the tense matchup that had five lead changes and one deadlock in the last one minute and eleven seconds.
The Fuel Masters climbed back from fourteen points down in the first half before establishing their largest lead at 86-76, midway through the final period.
But the Aces, eager to end their misery, launched a 13-2 storm to take a slim 89-88 advantage going into the final minute.
With 21 seconds left, Chris Bachero answered former teammate RJ Jazul’s triple with a big putback that sent the game to its last deadlock at 93-all.
Jazul torched his former motherclub with four triples en route to a 15-point and five-assist performance. Joseph Eriobu had a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds while John Wilson tallied 13 markers and six boards.
LaDontae Henton couldn’t rescue Alaska from another defeat despite posting game-high 30 points along with 10 boards and three assists.
