Meralco Bolts completed a gallant comeback as it shocked the Star Hotshots, 72-66, in the Game One of the 2017 PBA Governors’ Cup semifinals Sunday night at the Alonte Sports Arena in Biñan, Laguna.
The Bolts overcame an ugly start and a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter before pulling out all stops down the stretch in fashioning the win that gained them a headstart in the best-of-five affair.
Allen Durham posted 23 points and 23 rebounds along with four assists, one block and one steal, while Jared Dillinger registered 15 markers as the duo took over in the payoff period, combining for 18 of the team’s 25 points.
Still down by 11 with over five minutes left in the game, Meralco gave the Hotshots a dose of their own defensive medicine when they held them to just two points and even scoreless in the final three minutes and 44 seconds.
A 13-2 bomb capped by Dillinger’s third and last three-pointer tied the game at 66 with only 1:46 remaining.
Dillinger then, followed that up with a layup to give Meralco just its fourth taste of the lead, before Durham hit a dagger jumper with 33 seconds left and Garvo Lanete sealed the victory with a pair of free throws.
Star guards Jio Jalalon, Paul Lee, and Mark Barroca stepped up for the team, contributing at least 11 markers apice as import Kristofer Acox was limited to just seven points coupled with 16 boards.
