Magnolia Hotshots showed great poise down the stretch as it edged the San Miguel Beermen, 99-94, in Game One of the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup finals at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum Wednesday night.
The Hotshots, who finished the eliminations as a sixth seed before beating Ginebra in their best-of-three quarterfinals series and finishing off Rain or Shine in Game Seven of the semis, banked on its signature defense early on before Ian Sangalang took over in the clutch to stun the four-time defending champion San Miguel in their finals rematch.
As a result, Magnolia took an early 1-0 advantage in the best-of-seven championship series.
Paul Lee led the scoring for the Hotshots with 18 points on top of six rebounds and five assists. Ian Sangalang, who delivered a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds, nailed a clutch jumper from the elbow with over a minute left to put a stop on the Beermen’s last-ditch effort.
Mark Barroca had 17 points as well, Jio Jalalon got 16 markers, while Rafi Reavis continued his stellar play, finishing with 12 points and nine boards. Justin Melton had double digits as well with 11 markers.
With the loss, June Mar Fajardo’s monster outing of 35 points and 21 rebounds for San Miguel was put to naught, as well as Alex Cabagnot’s 18 markers, and Arwind Santos’s 13 points and 15 rebounds with five assists and two blocks.
Game Two of the match-up is on Friday, May 3, still at the Big Dome.
