Magnolia Hotshots withstood a valiant stand by the San Miguel Beermen and completed an 86-82 victory in Game Three of the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup finals at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum Sunday night.
The Hotshots almost squandered a comfortable lead in the payoff period but gathered themselves up just in time to retake the lead in the best-of-seven series, two games to one.
Mark Barroca was the catalyst in Magnolia’s win, supplying game-high 22 points on top of three rebounds, three assists, a steal, and a block for an all-around effort.
Ian Sangalang and Rafi Reavis provided significant support as well with 17 and 16 points, respectively, along with 15 rebounds apiece as Magnolia erected a 79-70 cushion heading into the final two minutes of the game.
The four-time defending champions Beermen, though, almost pulled the rag after closing the distance to within three, 79-82, 17 seconds left, but Magnolia banked on Barroca’s clutch free throws that sealed the win.
Arwind Santos spearheaded San Miguel with 19 points and 12 boards. June Mar Fajardo had a double-double outing as well with 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Terrence Romeo and Alex Cabagnot added 15 and 11 markers, respectively, in a lost cause.
Game Four of the series is on Wednesday, May 8, still at the Big Dome.
