GlobalPort Batang Pier notched its first win in the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup after escaping the Meralco Bolts, 86-85, on Friday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Dropping their conference opening game against the TNT KaTropa, the Batang Pier were able to come out victorious this time, despite the Bolts’ late-game challenge and playing without Mo Tautuaa, who was serving a one-game suspension.
Import Malcolm White led the way for GlobalPort with 27 points, 17 boards, two blocks, and one assist in 43 minutes, while getting huge support from the locals.
Stanley Pringle went off in the final frame, firing 13 of his 17 points in the quarter on top of seven rebounds, while Sean Anthony tallied 15 points, seven rebounds, and two assists but also commited six turnovers.
The Batang Pier were already ahead by 77-69, midway through the fourth period when Meralco fought back and pulled to within just 80-81, with over a minute to go.
But White responded for an 83-80 lead, before Pringle delivered from the free throw line to seal the bounce-back win- their first victory in post-Terrence Romeo era.
KG Canaleta had the hot hands for the Bolts, knocking down seven three-pointers for a game-high 28-point performance. Arinze Onuaku picked up from he left off from their last game with his 21 points, 14 caroms, three assists, two steals, and one block that just went for naught.
Both teams are now sporting an identical 1-1 win-loss record.
