Behind stellar effort from Allen Durham and Reynel Hugnatan, the Meralco Bolts finally got one over the Barangay Ginebra, 94-81, in the Game 3 of the 2017 PBA Governors’ Cup Finals at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum Wednesday evening.
With the win, the Bolts avoided being shut out and swept in the best-of-seven series as they cut Ginebra’s edge to 2-1.
Allen Durham put up another workmanlike showing, pouring in 38 points, 20 rebounds, five blocks, four assists, and two steals in almost 44 minutes of action, while Reynel Hugnatan stepped up for the locals as he erupted for 22 markers highlighted by seven triples, on top of five boards, two assists, and one steal off the bench.
Taking advantage of Ginebra’s late-game miscues, the Bolts broke out of a very tight contest halfway through the fourth period, establishing a 13-point cushion heading into the final one minute mark that doomed the Gin Kings.
With Meralco down by six, 72-66, 9:37 remaining, Durham and Lanete conspired and tied things up a 77-all, before Hugnatan knocked down his last two treys and Durham delivered strong on both ends, blocking shots, crashing the boards, and making huge baskets to complete a 19-4 turnaround.
Justin Brownlee led the five Ginebra players in double figures with his 15 points and 11 caroms. LA Tenorio and Japeth Aguilar had 14 markers and combined for seven assists, while Greg Slaughter and Scottie Thompson had 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Game 4 of the championship series is on October 20, Friday night, before the annual Leo Awards, also at the Big Dome.
