Rain or Shine Elasto Painters needed an extra session to escape the San Miguel Beer, 123-119, in their 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup matchup that had a cardiac finish, Sunday night at the Ynares Center in Antipolo, City.
After battling from behind 17 points in regulation, the E-Painters showed tremendous poise to finish the job in overtime, and pull off the hard-earned win that gained them the solo lead in the standings, toting a 4-1 record.
The result meanwhile, kept San Miguel winless after two outings, as the defending champions fought hard even without import Troy Gillenwater who got thrown out of the court late in the first half following a physical contact with a game official.
Reggie Johnson was in his usual self, finishing with 27 points, 19 rebounds, four assists, and two blocks in 43 minutes. Raymond Almazan stood tallest for Rain or Shine in overtime, scoring eight of the team’s 11 points, including the layup in the 1:13 mark that gave them their largest lead in extra period, 121-115.
The lanky big man wound up with 25 points on 8-of-12 shooting, 14 boards, one assist, and one block in just 23 minutes off the bench, while Chris Tiu and Maverick Ahanmisi chipped in 16 markers apiece. Gabe Norwood added 15 markers, eight rebounds, four assists, a steal, and a block.
The Elasto Painters had a chance to seal the victory in regulation, but Tiu split his charities before Alex Cabagnot tied the game with 11 seconds left.
But Rain or Shine made up for it and took advantage of Fajardo-less Beermen in overtime, opening the period with a 6-0 game-clinching bomb.
Arwind Santos paced San Miguel with 29 points and nine rebounds, while June Mar Fajardo notched 26 points and 11 boards before fouling out late in the fourth canto.
Marcio Lassiter chipped in 18 markers spiked by four triples, Christian Standhardinger bounced back from a forgettable debut with a double-double of 17 points and 15 rebounds, while Cabagnot and Gillenwater added 14 and 11 points, respectively, in a losing effort.
