Calvin Abueva and Vic Manuel gave Alaska a huge lift after merging for 48 points to put away Star in the extra period of the game, 97-90, Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. The Alaska Ace started their new year on the right track as they got back up quickly after getting tripped by TNT KaTropa in their last game of 2016. But it wasn’t an easy win as they had to go to overtime period when the Hotshots caught up with them to tie the regulation at 86-all.
Thanks to Calvin Abueva and Vic Manuel, the Aces were able to get by as the undersized but energetic forwards produced 23 points and 25 points, respectively. The duo also protected the glass well after collecting 17 rebounds combined. Alaska nabbed the crucial win that prevented them from falling all the way to ninth place.
Instead, the Aces are now joining two other teams in the third place after carrying 4-3 record. Hotshot Allein Maliksi caught fire in the fourth canto as his triple sent the game to overtime. But he turned cold in the end game to finished with team-high 15 points. After outscoring the Aces in the fourth canto, 21-14, Star Hotshot could only add four points in the OT frame compared to Alaska’s 11 as they suffered their fourth loss to share rivals Ginebra a spot below the team standings.
